Who Companion Care Is Best For

Companion care fits a wide range of situations. These are some of the most common.

Seniors who live alone and are becoming isolated

Less social activity and fewer daily interactions can take a quiet toll over time.

Someone who recently lost a spouse

The sudden shift from shared daily life to living alone is one of the most common triggers for isolation.

Seniors who have stopped driving

Losing that independence often means fewer outings and less connection with the outside world

Families who live out of town

A companion provides regular human presence and gives distant family members consistent, reliable updates.

Seniors who are independent but want more social interaction

Not every client needs help with daily tasks. Some simply want a reliable, relatable person to spend time with.

Why Families Choose Seniors Helping Seniors

01

Caregivers Who Actually Relate

Our caregivers are experienced, mature adults who share the same generational background as the seniors they visit. Conversations are natural. The connection is real.

02

Consistency You Can Count On

Seniors Helping Seniors tracks the Continuity of Care Index (COCI), a measure of how consistently the same caregiver visits the same client. Most agencies don’t measure this at all.

03

Dramatically Lower Turnover

The home care industry averages 68-80% caregiver turnover annually. Our rate is significantly below that, which means fewer new faces and a companion who actually knows your loved one

04

Personality-Matched Pairing

We match companions based on skill set, availability, proximity, and personality. The goal is a relationship that feels natural, not transactional.

From First Call to First Visit : How It Works

From your first call to a companion’s first visit, most families are up and running within 48 hours to one week. Here’s what that process looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions About Companion Care

Is companion care the same as home health care?

No. Companion care is non-medical. It focuses on social interaction, emotional support, and daily companionship for seniors who are generally independent. Home health care involves medical services such as wound care, medication administration, or skilled nursing. If your loved one needs help with daily activities like bathing or dressing, that falls under personal care, which is a separate service we also provide.

Can companion care be the only service we use?

Yes. Companion care is available as a standalone service with no requirement to enroll in personal care or homemaker services. Many families start with companionship alone and adjust from there. If your loved one is independent but isolated, this is a completely valid and common arrangement.

How often will a companion visit?

Care schedules are flexible and built around your loved one’s routine. Some clients have a companion visit a few times per week; others prefer daily visits. Care can start from as few as 6 hours per week. There is no obligation to increase hours unless the need changes.

Will we always have the same companion?

Consistency is a core priority. We track the Continuity of Care Index (COCI) to measure whether the same caregiver is consistently assigned to the same client over time. While no agency can guarantee the exact same companion for every visit, our significantly below-average caregiver turnover rate means your loved one is far more likely to see a familiar face than with most other providers.

What do companions actually do during a visit?

Visits can include conversation, shared activities like cards or puzzles, walks, coffee outings, attending local events, or accompanying your loved one on errands. Companions can also help with pet care and keep distant family members updated with regular check-ins.

How do you match a companion to my loved one?

After the in-home nurse assessment, our care team considers skill set, availability, proximity, and personality when selecting a match. If you or your loved one have specific preferences, we factor those in as well. If the first match isn’t the right fit, we will make a change promptly without any friction.

Can a companion help with errands or transportation?

Yes. When companion care is part of a broader care plan, caregivers can assist with errands and transportation to appointments, shopping trips, or social outings. They accompany your loved one throughout the outing, providing support and familiar company rather than simply dropping them off.

Do companions undergo background checks?

Every caregiver undergoes Level 2 background screening through Florida’s Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse before providing any care. This is the most comprehensive level of screening available in the state, and it is completed before a caregiver ever visits a client’s home.
