Home care in Sarasota is billed by the hour, and the total depends mostly on two things: how many hours of care your parent needs each week, and the level of care involved. The honest answer to what it costs is a range, not a single number. As a starting point, third-party survey data puts non-medical home care in Florida at a median of about $32 per hour in 2025, and the Sarasota area tends to run at or slightly above that. At Seniors Helping Seniors® Suncoast, most of the families we work with need far fewer hours than they first expect, which is usually why the real cost lands below the worst-case figure in their head. The accurate number for your situation comes from a short conversation and an in-home assessment, not a web page. Here is how the cost works, how it compares to a facility, and what can lower or remove what you pay.

What is the average cost of home care in Sarasota?

There is no flat rate, but there is a credible anchor. The CareScout Cost of Care Survey (formerly the Genworth survey), which has tracked long-term care costs since 2004, put the 2025 median for non-medical home care in Florida at about $32 per hour.

What that means each month depends entirely on hours. At 20 hours a week, which is closer to what most families actually need, that median works out to about $2,770 per month. At 44 hours a week, the benchmark the survey uses for full-time care, it works out to about $6,101 per month. These costs have risen year over year, so they are more likely to keep climbing than to drop.

Rates vary by agency depending on caregiver screening, training, and which insurance or state programs an agency is contracted with. Agencies with deeper background screening and broader payer contracts, such as VA, Medicare Advantage, and PACE, often run above the state median.

Two things to keep in mind for Sarasota specifically:

What makes home care cost more or less?

Two levers move the number more than anything else: how many hours per week, and what level of care.

Hours per week. Care can run from a few hours a week for companionship and light help all the way up to around-the-clock coverage. A plan of eight to twelve hours every day adds up quickly, even at a reasonable hourly rate, while a few visits a week stays modest. This is the single biggest driver of the monthly total.

Level of care. The type of help matters as much as the amount. There are two broad tiers:

Level of careWhat it includesRelative cost
Homemaker and companion helpLight housekeeping, meal prep, errands, medication reminders, companionshipLower tier
Hands-on personal careBathing, dressing, mobility and transfers, toiletingHigher tier

Homemaker and companion help covers day-to-day support that does not involve physical, hands-on care. Hands-on personal care costs more because it requires additional caregiver training. A few other factors nudge the total up: overnight shifts where the caregiver stays awake, continuous coverage with caregivers rotating in shifts, and needs like dementia support services that call for more hours of supervision.

Is home care cheaper than assisted living in Sarasota?

For most families, yes, and at the level of care most people need it is not close. At the Florida median, 20 hours of care a week comes to about $2,770 per month, roughly half the $5,610 monthly median for assisted living. Home care only moves close to facility pricing in heavy-care situations, around 44 hours a week, and most families need far less than that. If weekly hours do start climbing toward that range, it is worth weighing the options carefully.

Here is how the Florida 2025 third-party medians compare:

Care option (Florida, 2025)Estimated monthlyEstimated annual
Non-medical home care (20 hours/week, typical)$2,770$33,280
Non-medical home care (44 hours/week, heavy care)$6,101$73,216
Assisted living community$5,610$67,320
Nursing home, semi-private room$10,342$124,100

Rates vary by agency depending on caregiver screening, training, and which insurance or state programs an agency is contracted with. Agencies with deeper background screening and broader payer contracts, such as VA, Medicare Advantage, and PACE, often run above the state median.

The takeaway is that home care is priced by what you use. A facility charges a flat monthly rate whether your parent needs a little help or a lot. With home care, you pay only for the hours actually needed, and for many families those hours are modest.

Does Medicare pay for home care in Florida?

No, not the way most people assume. Traditional Medicare does not pay for ongoing non-medical, in-home care when that is the only care a person needs, and this is the question families get wrong most often. Getting it wrong can cost weeks of false assumptions. Medicare.gov is explicit that it does not cover custodial help with daily activities like bathing or dressing when that is the sole need. Medicare will only cover limited, doctor-ordered skilled home health, such as nursing or therapy for a homebound patient, and even then a home health aide is only included alongside that skilled care.

Medicare Advantage is a separate thing. Some Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) offer limited in-home support benefits that can include a set number of personal care or companion hours. These vary a lot by plan and year and often need prior authorization, so the plan’s current Summary of Benefits is what to check.

Ways to lower or eliminate what you pay

Many families have coverage options they do not know about going in. Several programs assess the individual, authorize a set number of weekly hours (commonly in the 4 to 20 hour range), and cover services at little to no out-of-pocket cost. We are contracted with the full range below, which is uncommon for a single agency:

ProgramWho it helpsTypical out-of-pocket
VA-funded careEligible veterans and surviving spouses$0
Certain Medicare Advantage plansEnrollees in qualifying plans$0
PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly)Enrolled participants$0
Florida elder-care programs (CCE, ADI, HCE, OAA Title III-E)Eligible Florida seniors and family caregiversLittle to none

For veterans, the VA covers the full cost of care for eligible individuals, so the veteran pays nothing out of pocket. Our VA-funded home care follows the hours the VA authorizes after its own assessment.

The Medicare Advantage plans we are contracted with include Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Longevity Health Plan, and Ultimate Health Plans, among others.

We are also an approved provider for several Florida Department of Elder Affairs programs: Community Care for the Elderly (CCE), the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative (ADI), Home Care for the Elderly (HCE), and the Older Americans Act Title III-E caregiver support program. You can see how these fit together on our coverage and payment options page, and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs has details on each state program.

How does home care billing work?

For a cost-conscious family, the billing structure itself is reassuring. There is no payment upfront. Families are billed after care has been delivered, every other week for the previous two weeks of service. You see what care was provided before you pay for it, which makes it easy to adjust the plan as needs change.

How to get an accurate cost for your parent

A web page can give you a range. An accurate number comes from understanding the actual situation. The process is simple:

The caregivers who provide that care are experienced, mature adults matched to your parent on skill set, availability, proximity, and personality, so the relationship feels personal and familiar. If you want to see the local picture first, our overview of home care in Sarasota covers the communities we serve across Sarasota and Manatee counties, including Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Palmer Ranch, Siesta Key, and Venice.

Get an accurate cost for your situation

Most families start with a short 10 to 15 minute call to talk through the situation and see whether home care is the right fit, with no obligation to move forward. From there, we can put an accurate cost in front of you, built around your parent’s real needs rather than a statewide average.
