What's Included in Personal Care Services

Our personal care services cover hands-on daily tasks that help clients stay safe and comfortable at home, from 6 hours a week up to around-the-clock care.

Bathing and Showering Assistance

Caregivers provide hands-on support for bathing and showering. For many families, shower safety is the first concern that leads them to call.

Dressing and Undressing Support

Help getting dressed and undressed, including buttons, zippers, and fasteners that are hard to manage due to arthritis or limited mobility.

Toileting, Oral Care, and Grooming

Assistance with personal hygiene, handled with dignity. A personal care assistant close in age and life experience makes this feel less clinical.

Mobility and Transfer Support

Help moving safely around the home, including transfers from bed to chair, walking support, and navigating stairs or uneven surfaces.

Eating and Drinking Assistance

For clients who need physical help at mealtimes, caregivers provide patient, unhurried support.

Safety and Fall Prevention

A registered nurse evaluates the home for hazards before care begins. Caregivers monitor safety on every visit and flag new concerns as they arise.

When Personal Care Services Make the Most Sense

Personal care is a good fit when daily physical tasks have become difficult, but moving to a facility isn’t the right step. These are the situations families commonly describe.

Shower Safety Has Become a Worry

If there have been slips or near-misses in the bathroom, or the family is worried about falls, personal care addresses this directly.

Dressing Is a Daily Struggle

Arthritis, limited range of motion, or post-surgery recovery can make getting dressed exhausting. A caregiver handles this matter-of-factly.

Family Caregivers Are Burning Out

When a spouse or adult child is providing daily physical care and needs regular relief, family caregiver support offers consistent, scheduled coverage.

Mobility Has Become Unsafe

If getting from bed to chair, navigating stairs, or moving through the house feels risky, a caregiver provides reliable, hands-on support.

Personal Hygiene Is Being Skipped

If bathing and grooming are being avoided because they've become difficult or uncomfortable, personal care restores routine in a respectful way.

Why Families Choose Seniors Helping Seniors®

01

Caregivers Who Understand From Experience

Our caregivers are experienced, mature adults, many of whom cared for a spouse or parent themselves. They share common ground with clients that makes the relationship feel natural, not transactional.

02

The Same Caregivers, Visit After Visit

Consistency is the difference between care that works and care that wears everyone out. Caregivers stay long-term, which means your loved one sees the same familiar faces instead of constant change. We track the Continuity of Care Index to make sure the same caregivers stay with the same clients over time. Consistency also improves safety, especially for clients with mobility challenges or cognitive decline.

03

Contracted with VA, Medicare Advantage, and PACE

Only a small percentage of agencies hold any one of these contracts. We hold all three, which reflects the quality standards these programs require from every agency they approve.

04

Level 2 Background-Screened Caregivers

Every caregiver is screened through Florida’s Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse before providing any care. This is the most thorough screening level available in the state.

How Personal Care Gets Started in Sarasota

  • Step 1
    Contact Our Intake Team

Call us or reach out online. Our intake coordinator will spend about 15 minutes understanding your situation, answering your questions, and helping determine whether personal care is the right next step.

  • Step 2
    Digital Paperwork

If you decide to move forward, documents are sent by email for review and signature. If you prefer to handle paperwork in person, we can arrange that too.

  • Step 3
    In-Home Nurse Assessment

A registered nurse visits the client's home for an hour-long assessment, typically within 24 to 48 hours of the initial call.

  • Step 4
    Caregiver Matching

We match based on skill set, availability, proximity, and personality to find the right fit for your loved one.

  • Step 5
    Care Gets Started

Most schedules begin within 48 hours to a week. More complex 24/7 arrangements take a little longer to coordinate.

What Families Are Saying

How to Pay for Personal Care in Sarasota

Personal care is available through several payment options. Most families pay privately, but eligible veterans and those with certain Medicare Advantage or PACE plans may have coverage options that reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs.

How Private Pay Billing Works

Billed every other week for the prior two weeks of care. No upfront payment required. Families receive a bill after care is provided, not before.

Care Funded Through the VA

Eligible veterans pay zero out of pocket. The VA authorizes weekly hours, typically 4 to 20, and we schedule care based on that authorization. Learn more on our Home Care for Veterans in Sarasota page.

Medicare Advantage Plan Coverage

Clients enrolled in qualifying Medicare Advantage plans may receive personal care at no out-of-pocket cost, subject to plan authorization.

Care Through the PACE Program

Individuals enrolled in PACE receive services at zero out-of-pocket cost based on their authorized weekly hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Personal Care

What services are included in a personal care plan?

Personal care covers hands-on assistance with bathing, dressing, toileting, oral care, grooming, eating, mobility, and fall prevention. These are called Activities of Daily Living, or ADLs. Home health aides who provide personal care are also trained for homemaker tasks like meal prep and light housekeeping. Care can start at 6 hours per week and scale up to 24/7 coverage with rotating caregivers.

Is a nurse assessment required before personal care starts?

Yes. A registered nurse visits the client’s home for a one-hour in-home assessment before personal care begins. The nurse reviews care needs and evaluates the home for fall hazards, checking for grab bars, shower access, throw rugs, and clutter in walkways. The nurse typically schedules this visit within 24 to 48 hours of the initial call. This assessment is specific to personal care services. Homemaker and companionship services do not require it.

How quickly can personal care get started in Sarasota?

From your first call to the start of care is typically 48 hours to one week, depending on the schedule. Simple weekly schedules can often begin within a couple of days. More complex arrangements, like 24/7 care with multiple rotating caregivers, take a little longer to coordinate. If you call today, our intake coordinator can usually arrange the nurse assessment for tomorrow.

Can personal care be covered by the VA or Medicare?

Yes. Seniors Helping Seniors® is contracted with the Veterans Administration, multiple Medicare Advantage plans, and the PACE program. Eligible veterans may receive personal care at zero out-of-pocket cost. The same applies to qualifying Medicare Advantage enrollees and PACE participants. Each program assesses the individual and authorizes weekly hours, typically 4 to 20, and we schedule care based on those authorized hours. Most families pay privately and are billed every other week after care is provided.

What happens if the caregiver isn't the right fit?

If the match isn’t working, we change it. Our goal is long-term consistency, not holding you to a pairing that doesn’t feel right. We listen to your feedback, adjust the care plan if needed, and introduce a new caregiver who better fits your loved one’s personality and preferences. Because our caregivers tend to stay long-term and we put care into the initial matching process, the need to switch is uncommon. But when it does happen, we handle it promptly.

Is personal care available overnight and on weekends?

Yes. Personal care is available around the clock, including overnight, weekends, and holidays. Care schedules can range from 6 hours per week up to continuous 24/7 coverage, with multiple caregivers rotating in shifts as needed. For overnight shifts, caregivers follow a protocol that requires them to stay awake through the night, so they can assist clients who need to get up, use the bathroom, or may become disoriented. Overnight coverage is also commonly used for respite, giving family caregivers a genuine break.
